We have come to learn that making theatre is a community-building art form, and are constantly seeking to expand, particularly through collaboration: Wham City, Black Cherry Puppet Theatre, Load of Fun Theatre, The Gossip Factory (NYC), Missoula Oblongata, Insurgent Theatre (Milwaukee), Bedlam Theatre (Minneapolis) and the Copycat Theatre. Also, we have presented work from students of the Maryland Institute College of Art and Johns Hopkins University, as well as from teenagers living in South Baltimore. As per our mission statement, we seek to provide a creative space for diverse artists to search for new ideas through performance and the arts, with an emphasis on theatre; we have proceeded to accomplish this goal since its inception, and intend to continue.
With a core team of nine steady members, the Baltimore Annex Theater has been producing and hosting numerous performances that span time and culture for the past three years: from psychedelic film homage Fantastic Planet (2010) to classics such as Rhinoceros (2008) and Dr. Faustus, from the tragic Noh Matsu Kaze (2009) to original works by members and friends of the company. The Annex has embarked on three tours, held community workshops and hosted traveling theater shows and festivals. Most importantly, the Annex has helped to create a thriving experimental performance culture that extends beyond the traditional theatre space, even transcending the now almost institutionalized ritual of underground music events.
